To Understand our Business and our Brand, one has to understand our Passion.

The (beginning) of “The Story Behind the Name”.

. . . it’s long, but we’ve been around for quite a while, and in business for over 40 years . . .

At Eat Dessert First®, we just don’t sell desserts, we share our love of desserts, we teach others to bake, and we give back to our community. Because that is what is important to us. Here is a glimpse into our journey and how we began.

The humble beginnings of Eat Dessert First® started for me as a young child when I assisted my Mother in making apple pies, usually with those pies going to elderly neighbors. The pies were usually delivered before dinner, and the neighbors would be delighted when they saw us approaching, and especially delighted if they saw my Mother holding a pie. Once inside, we’d usually be offered a cup of tea or soda, and we’d sit at their table to talk. On every occasion, our neighbors were so happy and they’d always say that they would enjoy the pie after dinner that evening, and they could hardly wait to eat it. And on each instance, ever trying to help, I’d always be astonished and say quietly to the neighbor, “why don’t you just eat dessert first?”. Of course, everyone laughed, I smiled, but I never got an answer. The neighbor would only say that they’d wait until after dinner to enjoy the pie. The same occurrence happened again and again. I knew there must be a reason, I just never knew what that reason was. Much has happened since then, but, cut to:

Several years later . . . I was going with my aunt to visit my uncle in the hospital. For my visit, I wished to bring “thank you” desserts to the nursing staff, so I made several trays of various types of brownies. By this time, I had started culinary school, was selling my products, and making a name for myself as a young businesswoman. On that day, however, I was anxious to give back to the community and nursing staff who so lovingly took such great care of my uncle. That morning, my aunt and I went to the hospital with the trays of brownies, and placed them in my uncle’s room. We knew he could eat the plain brownies, so those were made specially for him.

My aunt was sitting next to my uncle, and the nurse was tending to business reading a chart. It was then that my uncle asked if I was going to bring him one of those delicious brownies I had made. He said he “wanted to see what I had learned in culinary school!” I hesitated and looked at the nurse. Then I asked if he needed to wait until after lunch to eat it. Everyone chuckled. My aunt smiled, the nurse smiled, and my uncle said, “It’s okay!” and the nurse nodded in agreement. I brought him a brownie on a plate and gave it to him. He thanked me, and then looked me squarely in the eye and said quite matter of factly, “Life is short, dear. Don’t wait to eat your desserts.” I looked back at him and studied his face. Then he gave me his big smile, picked up the brownie, and took a bite. Yes, he loved it, and that made me happy.

Soon after, my aunt and I took the trays out to the nurse’s station in the hall, and all the nurses exclaimed over the “beautiful brownies”. And then I looked at them. It was only 11:00. Were they all going to eat the brownies before lunch, also? And, then, one by one, each began taking a brownie, until one tray of desserts had entirely been eaten. And then they took the covering off the second tray, and those brownies slowly began to disappear, one by one.

I looked on in astonishment, and then I smiled until I almost laughed. These little desserts had been the highlight of the morning, and everyone was so enjoying them. I had always wondered why our elderly neighbor would wait to eat dessert until after her meal, and here, everyone was enjoying themselves eating their dessert before their meal. It didn’t make sense, but it all made sense. Eat Dessert First! It made everyone happy, there were no ill consequences, and everyone was still able to eat lunch in an hour. It seemed to make so much sense and was the perfect solution. To everything in life! Eat Dessert First! And so it began. Or continued, because remember we “cut to”, and that story in between will live to be a star another day.

Meanwhile, the nurse taking care of my uncle saw me smiling and laughing at everyone enjoying the brownies, and she took me aside to thank me for my kindness to the nursing staff. She then stopped for one brief moment and became serious. She looked at me and said, “Life really is short.”, and then she stopped. She didn’t say another word, and tears swelled up in my eyes. The nurse gave me a hug and that was the end of our conversation.

Here was a person who dealt with life every single hour of her work day, and she knew the preciousness and fragileness of life. Yet here she was enjoying herself eating a simple brownie, and it brought her and the other nurses so much happiness. And when I saw that, and pieced together the instances of my life, I knew then and there that the name of my business that I had would be called Eat Dessert First. There was no other name that it could possibly be. My desserts brought happiness to people, they brought smiles and laughter, and they brought people together. And that’s what’s important in life. And that is our brand, our passion, and our life. If Eat Dessert First® can put a smile on someone’s face, or bring people together, or a dessert from us can let someone know that you care, then we’ve done the best that we can do in making your life better. We bake, we create, we decorate, we make a living by doing this, and we willingly share and give back to the community in order to improve everyone’s lifestyle, and that is what Eat Dessert First® is all about.

We thank you for visiting our site and for taking the time to read a little bit about us. Yes, there’s more to the story of how we began, and each instance continues to reinforce our brand. For now, we end our story but, rest assured, there will be many more stories to follow.
